Island of Pag, Croatia

The island of Pag belongs to the North-Adriatic group of islands. It stretches south of the island with an indented coast of 270 km, the island with most indented coastline; which is especially marked Pag bay, a deep bay in the middle of the island, 20 km long, it acts like a lake, with endless sandy beaches on the west side, which series begins with the famous bay and the Zrce beach.

The island of Pag is an island of great contrasts; the island of stone intertwined with stone walls, enclosing the pastures intended for the Pag sheep a, great tradition of the island, sheep breeding and production of Pag cheese.

To the western part of Pag, west of Novalje , the olive groves of indigenous olive logs spread, centuries-old olive trees, whose age is estimated to be the oldest examples of over 1000 years.

Archaeological excavations have revealed significant excavations dating back to ancient times; the Roman aqueduct, the Cise site, in today's bay Caska, with the remains of ancient villas. Rigorous attention is given to the remains of the great basilica in Novalja, from the 5th century of early Christian antiquity, with magnificent ruins and mosaics and found reliquary.

In the Middle Ages the city of Pag developed as a central urban area; urbanized by plans of Juraj Dalmatinac, author of the famous Cathedral of Sibenik, whose development conditioned the salt fields and salt production as a strategic raw material.

The dynamic development of the island in recent decades is the result of the exceptional connection of the island with the mainland; on the south side a bridge connects the mainland and on the north side of the fast ferry connections Prizna - Zigljan, with about a ten minute ride.

The fast catamaran line Novalja – Rijeka – Novalja, is the fastest and cheapest traveling line ( 40,00 kn/pax ).
